BenQ ScreenBar e-Reading Lamp Review

In this day and age, computer users are technically increasing every day. Even more so thanks to the whole Movement Control Order (or Circuit Breakers) imposed by the governments the world over to combat the spread of covid-19.

So what’s the deal with an increase use of computers? Well, in this article, we want to share and illuminate about the adverse effects computers may cause to your physical health. While many people are aware of having good posture-care ergonomics for their prolonged sitting and carpal tunnel syndrome prevention, only few amongst seasoned computer users are aware of how monitors and workspace could also gradually affect our eyes.

Our pupils shrink under bright, stronger lights and enlarges with little light or in darkness. So imagine a scenario where your monitor is brightly lit while your keyboard and other areas of the workstation are poorly illuminated. What happens is that when your eyes shift focus from the monitor towards the dark areas, your pupils will dilate. Therefore, working long hours in an unsuitably lit environment would certainly strain the eyes by causing continual pupil dilation and shrinkage as you shift focus from your monitor to other areas and vice versa. This strain on the internal eye muscles will tire the eyes at the end of the day and even cause headaches, which would inadvertently impair efficiency in the long run.

Thankfully, BenQ’s solution and foray into eye care is with the ScreenBar e-Reading Lamp. In this review, we uncover why it is essential to really taking care of your eyes when you are a heavy PC user.

What’s In The Box

Right out of the box, you are presented with a monitor harness, a USB power cable and the ScreenBar lamp itself.

The ScreenBar has multiple touch controls, which will let you adjust and control illumination levels, light temperature levels (2700K to 65000K), and decked with sensors that will help adjust the brightness based on surrounding brightness and then supplements it with just the right amount of light. More on this later.

While it seems rather simple, the ScreenBar is actually pretty bright for its built and does not heat up when powered on due to the LED construction.

This is a weighted harness for monitors. You pretty much just place it on top of the monitor. The weighted compartment would serve as a really good balance for the ScreenBar to stay in place. To attach the ScreenBar, simply snap it onto the holding compartment.

Just make sure that the ScreenBar’s power port is correctly positioned when you snap it onto the harness. This opening meant for the power port in order for you to connect the power cable through.

From the front, it should look as such where the touch controls markers are correctly visible. It does have some weight to it all because it would pretty much just sit on your monitor without any hard attachment.

Connecting To Power

As mentioned previously, the opening is meant for the power cable to go through and connect with the power port of the ScreenBar. Yes, in case you’re wondering you have to connect to a USB source for constant power, in this case, to your motherboard’s USB port. It won’t draw a lot of power away from your PC.

As you can see here, the touch controls should be properly aligned while the sensor will be facing upwards to the ceiling in order to sense the ambient lighting using BenQ’s proprietary Brightness Intelligence Technology (B.I. Tech). You can also adjust the angles by rotating the ScreenBar on the harness based on your preference.

Here’s how it pretty much looks like when it’s fully functioning. Just so you know, it’s incredibly space-saving. The entire unit of the product isn’t even touching the table. It just sits on top of your monitor with the power cable connected to your CPU. It’s convenient, lightweight and definitely does its job.

Shine Bright Like A ScreenBar

When it comes to brightness, the ScreenBar performs exceptionally. It pretty much illuminates everything in front of you and the monitor – but without impairing the quality of colors and visuals from your monitor. The layer of light that it creates also serve as a kind of invisible barrier that would knock off other light reflections, effectively reducing screen glares.

There are 14 levels of brightness and 8 color temperatures ranging from 2700K to 6500K, in which you can adjust to suit your eyes and environment.

Notice how the table is being illuminated on the front. This effectively means that when your eyes would to focus on the keyboard and mouse, your eyes won’t strain as much. At the same time, the monitor’s visuals remain crisp and vivid.

The illuminance (lux) of the BenQ Screenbar is 500 lux as opposed to 300 lux of other desktop lights in the market. Lux is the total luminous flux incident on a surface, per unit area. Hence, the BenQ Screenbar features 500 lux full coverage within an area of 74X35cm. 500 lux is the recommended range of office lighting as it truly does impact productivity and efficiency.

Here’s another photo to show you with the Screenbar turned off. The visuals on the monitor is just like how you would view it with the ScreenBar turned on. This means the ScreenBar won’t rob the monitor or impair any of its visual quality.

Just to share, this is a diagram of how the BenQ Screenbar is better when compared to other screen lights in the market. The meticulous design of the BenQ Screenbar takes into account its purpose for the human well-being, where its counterparts might not consider extensively on how the product and lighting can improve the condition of users’ eyes.

Conclusion

BenQ’s ScreenBar e-Reading Lamp is one such product that is often overlooked as it is not a core component of a computer. However, when you actually have one with you, the difference it makes especially in caring for your eyes is of paramount importance.

If you’re a heavy PC user, or even a gamer. You should consider getting this to give your eyes the love and care it so rightfully deserve. And this is the product that we feel would truly provide that hight level of eye strain prevention based on its built quality and features – for any PC users out there.

Remember that you only have a pair of eyes and we should not take it for granted. Ensuing this review, do give functional PC accessories such as the ScreenBar a good after-thought and you would come to realize how you will benefit from it in the long run.
